Consultation meeting of Education Ministers of E9 countries

Recently on the ‘E9 initiative’, a consultation meeting of education ministers of ‘E9 countries’ was held, which was attended by Minister of State for Education Sanjay Dhotre.

Theme of this meeting: E9 initiative: Scaling up digital learning to accelerate progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 4

Key Points:

  • The meeting targets children and youth who are deprived of education, especially girls.
  • This is the first phase of a three-step process of building initiatives on digital learning and skills.
  • During this meeting, leaders will launch an initiative on digital learning and skills.

The major objective of this initiative is to advance the ‘Sustainable Development Goal-4’ agenda through a change in the education system and accelerate reform, through rapid changes in the three priorities of the ‘Global Education Conference’ held in 2020-

  • Support to teachers
  • Investment in skills and
  • Reducing the digital divide,
  • The 2020 Global Education Meeting was organized by UNESCO.It served as a unique platform for the exchange of ideas between high level leaders and policy makers.

Sustainable Development Goal-4: Provides an opportunity to accelerate digital education and skill-development progress towards achieving quality education.

E9 Initiative:

  • The E9 initiative is a platform of nine countries. It was created to achieve the UNESCO initiative “Education for All”.
  • E in E9 means Education and ‘9’ represents nine member countries. The member countries of the E9 initiative are Brazil, Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Mexico and Nigeria.These countries represent half of the world’s population. 70% of the world’s literate adults are from these countries.

India and E9:

  • The E9 initiative was launched at the EFA Summit in New Delhi. The E9 initiative has become a platform for countries to discuss their experiences related to exchange of best practices, education etc.
  • Members of E9 who are also G20 members – India, China, Brazil, Indonesia and Mexico. Mexico is an OECD member. In 1993, E9 countries accounted for only 5% of world GDP. However, today they are 30% of world GDP.

Education for All

It is a global movement led by UNESCO. It aims to meet the learning needs of youth, children and adults. This initiative was adopted in April 2000 by the Dakar Framework.
