Portal and logo dedicated to the Conformity Assessment Scheme of milk products
Recently the Prime Minister has launched a dedicated portal and logo for the Conformity Assessment Scheme (CAS) of milk products.
Developers: Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and National Dairy Development Board (NDDB).
The Conformity Assessment Scheme (CAS) is the first of its kind certification scheme. It has tried to bring the erstwhile BIS- ISI mark and NDDB quality mark and the integrated logo of Kamdhenu cow together under the ‘Product-Food Safety Management System’ process certification.
Earlier, there was no unified mechanism of product and process certification. This made it difficult for dairy plants to obtain end-to-end certification.
It is to be noted that NDDB and BIS have also been involved in process and certification of products respectively.
Benefits:
- Simplify the certification process and ensure end-to-end certification across the dairy value chain.
- To increase the income of farmers and sales of milk and milk products in the organized sector.
- Developing a quality culture in the dairy sector
There is a need to ensure the quality and food security of milk and milk products. Milk powder is the second food item after olive oil, in which there is a risk of adulteration.
Some of the major adulterants used in milk include urea, formalin, detergents, ammonium sulfate, boric acid, caustic soda, benzoic acid, salicylic acid, hydrogen peroxide, sugar and melamine. They have serious adverse effects on health.
