Complete Human Genome Sequencing

Recently scientists have finally sequenced the entire human genome.

In a recently published research, an international team details the sequencing of the entire human genome for the first time.

Earlier efforts had not been able to sequence the entire human genome. This happened because the DNA sequencing technologies of the time were not able to read about 8% of the genome.

  • Under this, the DNA The exact sequence of nucleotides or bases (simply) present within the molecule is traced. DNA consists of 4 nucleotides or bases. These are adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G) and thiamine (T). The sequence of these four makes up the DNA of an organism.
  • The complete set of DNA of an organism is called genome. The genome includes all the chromosomes. Chromosomes consist of DNA, and genes. It is known that genes are specific segments of DNA.
  • There are about 3 billion base pairs in the human genome. These direct the creation of human and his persistence in this form.

Benefits from genome sequencing:

  • It will provide a better understanding of human cell development and its biology.
  • This may be helpful in identifying genomic causes responsible for rare diseases. Also, it will help in finding DNA for therapeutic measures in areas like aging, neurodegenerative conditions, cancer etc.
  • This will also help in identifying the genetic mutation (i.e., genetic mutation). Also, this will improve the existing understanding related to the spread and evolution of the virus.

Initiatives taken for Genome Sequencing:

  • Genome India Project: This is an initiative of the Department of Biotechnology.
  • Human Genome Project: This was an international research effort, which concluded in the year 2003.
