Capacity Building in Integrated River Basin Management (RBM)
Recently MoU has been presented on Use of Geospatial Technology in River Ecosystem for Capacity Building in Integrated River Basin Management (RBM).
National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has signed a MoU with South Asian Institute for Advanced Research and Development: SAIARD to strengthen capacity building in Integrated River Basin Management (IRBM) using geospatial technology.
Application of Geospatial Technology in India’s Water Sector
- Water Body Information System (Bhuvan-WBIS): The sensor-derived water bodies information is used to generate spatial maps of surface water bodies.
- National Information System for Climate and Environmental Studies (NICES): Provides accurate and long-term climate database offspring at the national level.
- India Water Resources Info system (India-WRIS): This includes tools for editing the Geographical Information System (GIS) layer along with modules on water resources projects along with information related to water resources through dashboards.
- Jal Jeevan Mission: GIS mapping of water supply and sewage infrastructure etc.
- Namami Gange: Preparation of base maps and models.
- Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP): Remote sensing and GIS technology is being used for dam site selection and progress monitoring.
- National River Linking Project-NRLP: To understand the characteristics of rivers during monsoon and non-monsoon seasons.
About Geospatial Technology:
- It allows tracking a target object and referencing it to a specific location.
- It helps in studying the actual geographical information of the Earth by using Geographic Information System (GIS), Remote Sensing, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT) etc.
