Controversial ‘Butterfly Mine’
Recently Russia has been accused of using PFM-1. PFM-1 is also known as ‘Butterfly Mines’.
These look like toys and hence are dangerous for children. PFM-1 and PFM-1S are two types of anti-personnel land mines. These are commonly called ‘butterfly mines’ or ‘green parrot’.
These mines can be laid through ballistic propagation by dropping them from helicopters or using artillery and mortar shells.
The International Convention on Land Mines has prohibited ‘anti-personnel land mines’. However, Russia and Ukraine are not its signatories.
