Dr BR Ambedkar’s birth anniversary
On April 14, 2022, the 131st birth anniversary of BR Ambedkar was celebrated in India. Dr. Ambedkar was a social reformer, jurist, economist, writer, polyglot scholar and thinker of various religions.
Babasaheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar was born in the year 1891 in Mhow, Central Provinces (now Madhya Pradesh).
Brief Introduction:
Ambedkar is called the Father of the Indian Constitution. He was the first Law Minister of India, as well as the Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constitution.
Contribution:
- He led the Mahad Satyagraha in March 1927 against the Hindus who were opposing the decision of the Municipality Board.
- In 1926, the Municipal Board of Mahad (Maharashtra) passed an order for all communities to use ponds. Earlier in Mahad the untouchables were not allowed to use the water of the pond.
- Ambedkar had participated in the three Round Table Conferences.
- In the year 1932, he signed the Poona Pact with Mahatma Gandhi, after which Dr. Ambedkar dropped the idea of demanding a separate electorate for the Depressed Classes (Communal Award).
- However, the number of reserved seats for Depressed Classes in the Provincial Legislatures was increased from 71 to 147 and the number of reserved seats for Depressed Classes in the Central Legislature was increased by 18 percent.
Elections and Positions:
In the year 1936, Ambedkar was elected to the Bombay Legislative Assembly as an MLA. Also in the year 1942 he was appointed as an executive member to the Viceroy’s Executive Council.
Adoption of Buddhism:
- He resigned from the cabinet in 1951 over differences over the Hindu Code Bill, accepted Buddhism and died on 6 December 1956 (Mahaparinirvana Day).
- In the year 1990, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award.
