Border Infrastructure and Management (BIM) Scheme

Border Infrastructure and Management (BIM) Scheme

Recently, the Central Government has decided that it will continue the Central Sector Composite Plan of Border Infrastructure and Management (BIM) from the year 2021-22 to the year 2025-26.

The Border Infrastructure and Management (BIM) plan deals with securing India’s borders with Pakistan, Bangladesh, China, Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar.

Under the scheme, assistance will be given in building infrastructure like border fencing, border flood lights, technical solutions, border roads and border posts (BoPs) and company operating bases.

Significance of the scheme:

  • The scheme will help in strengthening the infrastructure for improving border management, policing and vigil. The importance of border infrastructure for India will help in early deployment of troops including armored vehicles.
  • Illegal activities like smuggling, illegal infiltration, counterfeit currency etc. can be curbed. Effective connectivity can be established in all seasons.
  • Trade relations with neighboring countries will improve.
  • It will help in maintaining peace and stability in the region.

Other initiatives taken for border management:

  • Communication and surveillance equipment has been integrated to monitor the activities along the Jammu border. Thus it is an attempt to integrate technology in border management.
  • The ‘Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System’ improves the capability of the Border Security Force in detecting and dealing with cross-border crimes.
  • The Ministry of Home Affairs had launched the ‘Border Area Development Programme’. This program is part of a comprehensive approach to border management.
  • Project BOLD-OIT (Border Electronically Dominated QRT Interception Technique) has been brought in. With this, the river areas connected with the Indo-Bangladesh borders will be equipped with security technologies.
