Bihar’s first floating power plant built in Darbhanga
Recently Bihar’s first floating power plant will be started soon in Darbhanga.
A 2 MW floating solar power generation unit is being set up in Darbhanga, Bihar. Its aim is to promote fisheries and to produce green energy from solar panels.
Earlier, India’s largest floating solar photovoltaic (PV) plant was commissioned at NTPC-Simhadri, Andhra Pradesh.
Photovoltaic panels under floating plants are installed on the water surface of water bodies. They are considered as a viable alternative to land based solar arrays.
Advantages of floating solar power plant:
- There is no geo-location requirement for the installation of solar panels.
- Electricity generation is increased, as water keeps the solar panels cool. This ensures their efficiency when the temperature rises.
- The shade generated by floating solar panels helps reduce the chances of algae blooms having the following benefits.
- The evaporation of water will decrease. This will conserve water resources.
- Relatively free water surface can effectively block shade from trees, mountains etc.
Limitations of floating solar power plant:
- The cost of installing them is quite high.
- There is a risk of corrosion and rusting due to moisture. This problem is especially high in disturbed coastal environments.
- Safety concerns arise because floating solar panels involve both water and electricity.
- Its racking system should be useful for long life and have high load carrying capacity.
