Belagavi Border Dispute
Recently, tensions have escalated over the inter-state dispute between Karnataka and Maharashtra over a law and order-related issue.
Belagavi Border Dispute – Belagavi (Belgaum) was part of Bombay Presidency during independence. This issue arose during the reorganization of states on linguistic lines in the year 1956.
Claims from both sides:
Maharashtra: Belagavi is largely a Marathi speaking region. It has many parts exclusively Marathi speaking.
Karnataka: The Marathi population here is only around 35%, which makes this. This is equal to the Kannada speaking population of the region.
The reason for this type of dispute is British colonial policy, political opportunism, lack of implementation of recommendations on border disputes, etc.
