Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav 2021

  • Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav is a series of events to be organised by the Government of India to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of India’s Independence. The Mahotsav will be celebrated as a Jan-Utsav in the spirit of Jan-Bhagidari.
  • The yatra will start from Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad to a place called Dandi in Navsari district; it will cover a total distance of 386 km and will be completed in 25 days.
  • The padyatra, which revived the memory of the historic Dandi March under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, also known as the Salt March, was flagged off by the Prime Minister.
  • It should be known that this yatra is going on the occasion of the 91st anniversary of the historic march against the salt tax imposed by the British.

‘Salt Satyagraha’:

  • This Salt March began on March 12, 1930 and ended on April 6, This 24-day march was completely non-violent in nature.
  • This movement gave rise to widespread mass struggle against the British throughout the country. Sarojini Naidu led the Salt Satyagraha along with Gandhi. With this, the Civil Disobedience Movement was started on a large scale.
  • On 31 January 1930, Mahatma Gandhi wrote a letter to Viceroy Irwin in which 11 demands were mentioned. The most important of these demands was the abolition of the tax on salt.
  • During the British rule in India, a large amount of tax was levied on the production and sale of salt and, a program of civil disobedience was organized to make the Indians free from this law and to get their rights due to salt being a necessary thing for life.
  • GandhiJi was released from prison in January 1931, after which he met the Viceroy of India, Lord Irwin.In this meeting, it was agreed to attend the Round Table Conferences on the future of India in London and to end the Satyagraha.
