Animal Pandemic Preparedness Initiative (APPI)

The Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying launched Animal Pandemic Preparedness Initiative (APPI) and World Bank funded “Animal Health System Support for one Health” on 14 April 2023. AHSSOH) launched.

As per Livestock Census, 2019, India has the largest national livestock population (536.76 million) in the world. This livestock population is a major source of income for about 80 million farmers.

Zoonotic diseases cause an estimated $40 billion indirect loss in India.

The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying has taken the following initiatives:

Animal Pandemic Preparedness Initiative: APPI

  • Comprehensive integrated disease surveillance and monitoring system will be established. It will be built on the National Digital Livestock Mission.
  • Disease modeling algorithms and early warning systems will be developed.
  • The regulatory system will be strengthened. For example, Nandi Online Portal and Field Trial Guidelines. Targeted research and development to develop vaccines/diagnostics/treatment for priority diseases.

Animal Health System Support for One Health: AHSSOH

  • AHSSOH aims to create an ecosystem for a better animal health management system using the One Health approach.
  • It will be implemented as a Central Sector Scheme for a period of 5 years.
  • It will initially cover five states (Assam, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka).

Objectives of the AHSSOH Project:

  • Strengthening of district level laboratories,
  • Providing mobile veterinary units in remote locations and high-risk areas, training veterinary doctors as well as private clinical professionals,
  • Upgradation of dispensaries and hospitals etc.
