Andaman & Nicobar-Aceh Connectivity
Shipping lane connectivity was envisioned in the year 2018. It aims to harness the economic potential of both India and Indonesia.
The Sabang port located in Aceh is just 90 nautical miles from the Indian islands of Andaman and Nicobar.
Sabang is located at the entrance to the Strait of Malacca. It is considered a major global check point.
However, some concerns have also emerged due to the following reasons:
- Rohingya presence near Aceh.
- Nicobar Islands and Aceh have been identified as vulnerable areas in the illegal smuggling route of South East Asia etc.
- For this reason it is important to improve the control and monitoring of maritime traffic and other small boat movements in the region.
