First ever All India Survey on Domestic Workers
Recently the Union Minister of Labor and Employment launched the first All India Survey on Domestic Workers (AISDWs).
The objective of this survey is to estimate the percentage distribution of domestic workers on the basis of number and proportion of domestic workers, live-in/live-out, formal/informal employment and other socio-economic characteristics at the national and state level. It will also cover data gaps and aid in evidence-based policy making processes.
AISDWs is part of 5 pan India surveys being conducted by Labor Bureau.
The other four All India Surveys released at present are related to:
- Migrant laborers,
- Employment created in the transport sector,
- Employment generated by professionals and
- All India Quarterly Establishment Based Employment Survey (ADEES)
AISDWs Required:
- Domestic workers are the third largest category of workers after agriculture and construction. Rapid urbanization will lead to labor migration and increase the number of domestic workers.
- COVID-19 has marginalized domestic workers.
Problems faced by domestic workers:
- There have been widespread reports of domestic workers being underpaid, overworked and abused by their employers in India.
- There is a lack of comprehensive and uniformly enforced national legislation that guarantees fair conditions of employment and better working conditions for domestic workers.
