UNGA adopts resolution to strongly deplored Russia’s aggression
Recently the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has adopted a resolution titled “Aggression Against Ukraine”.
The resolution calls on Russia to ‘immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all its military forces from the territory of Ukraine.
A total of 141 countries voted in favor of this resolution, while 35 countries including India did not participate in the voting.
The 5 countries that voted against this resolution are Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea, Russia and Syria.
Absent during the voting on this resolution, India demanded safe evacuation of all Indian nationals stranded in Ukraine without any hassle.
Earlier, India did not participate in the voting even during the resolution tabled by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) condemning the Russian attack on Ukraine. However, India stressed the need to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the countries.
About the resolution presented by the United Nations General Assembly-
- Resolutions and decisions are adopted by the majority of the member states present and voting in the United Nations General Assembly.
- Important questions, including recommendations on international peace and security and the election of members of certain major organs of the United Nations, are required to be decided by a two-thirds majority.
- Although decisions taken by the General Assembly through resolution are not legally binding on governments, they reflect the views of the countries of the world and the ethics of the global community.
- When a resolution is voted on in the General Assembly, none of the five permanent members of the Security Council can exercise their veto.
