- In December 2021, the World Health Assembly (WHA) agreed to launch a global process to draft a pandemic treaty.
Objectives of Global Pandemic Treaty
Its main goal is to encourage an inclusive approach of all governments and all societies, strengthen national, regional and global capabilities, and increase resilience to future pandemics.
The following aspects are likely to be included in the Global Pandemic Treaty:
- sharing data on new viruses and sequencing their genomes,
- Ensuring equitable distribution of vaccines and medicines and
- To ensure equitable distribution of research related to these.
Benefits of the global pandemic treaty
- Pandemic can be detected early, and they can be stopped early.
- In future any such pandemic can be dealt with and necessary action can be taken. In particular, universal and equitable access to medical solutions such as vaccines, drugs and treatments will be ensured.
- The focus will be on ‘One Health’ approach. This approach links the health of humans, animals and the earth.
- The treaty will ensure high, sustained and long-lasting political dialogue at the global level.
