Recently seven indigenous products of Uttarakhand have got the Geographical Indications (GI) tag.
These 7 indigenous products of Uttarakhand that got GI tag include:
- Kumaon’s Chura Oil
- Munsiyari Rajma
- Bhotia dann
- Aipan
- Ringal Craft
- Copper products
- Thulma
It may be noted that Tejpatta (Indian Bay Leaf) was the first product from the state to get GI tag.
A GI is an indicator used for products that have a specific geographical origin, quality, or reputation. These characteristics are acquired by them due to their region of origin. Generally GI tags are used for agricultural products, food items, wine and alcoholic beverages, handicrafts and industrial products.
GI is part of intellectual property rights. It is included under the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property.
Getting a GI tag also gives many rights. In such a situation, when the product of a third party does not conform to the prescribed standards, then using it (ie GI rights) is prevented from selling the said product etc. to the third party.
Geographical Indication Registration in India is governed by the Geographical Indications of Goods “Registration and Protection” Act of 1999.
