DoT allots license and spectrum for 5G trial in Gujarat
Recently Department of Telecom has allotted licenses for 5G trial in Gujarat.
Vodafone-Idea Limited and Reliance Jio Info-com have been awarded licenses and spectrum for 5G trial in Gujarat.
5G (5th generation) is the next generation mobile network technology after 4GLTE network. It is not a single technology but an amalgamation of different techniques like:
- Large multi-user Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) capable network.
- Small cell stations for seamless connectivity of base stations and users.
- Mobile edge computing, which brings cloud computing physically closer to the user.
Possible uses of 5G technology
- Advanced mobile broadband (high-quality streaming and instant storage),
- Increased range and interactivity of drones,
- Smart city infrastructure,
- Traffic management,
- Precision agriculture etc.
Challenges related to the introduction of 5G services:
Technical (lack of spectrum availability, inefficiency in manufacturing home electronic equipment etc.), financial (higher tax burden on telecom companies), infrastructure (backhaul, memory and storage infrastructure) etc.
Measures taken in India to start 5G:
- Objectives have been set in respect of 50 services in the National Digital Communication Policy-2018.
- The Department of Telecommunications (DOT) has simplified the testing methodology by providing spectrum for demonstration purposes.
- The 5G High Level Forum was set up in the year 2017 to articulate the vision of 50 in India.
