50th anniversary of India-Vietnam bilateral diplomatic relations
Recently, India and Vietnam have congratulated each other on the 50th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations. On this occasion, both sides shared the historical origins of Buddhism and the experiences of the struggle for freedom from colonial rule.
Mahatma Gandhi and Ho Chi Minh are considered the fathers of the nation in India and Vietnam respectively. He had led the people in a heroic struggle.
The Buddhist monks, “Mahajavaka and Kalyanacuriare”, are credited with founding Buddhism in Vietnam during the 2nd century BCE.
In 2007, the two countries extended their bilateral ties to the ‘Strategic Partnership’. The level of these relations was further increased in the year 2016 in the form of “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership”.
In the year 2020, the two countries adopted a historic joint vision for peace, prosperity and people.
Importance of Vietnam for India:
It should be noted that the relations between India and Vietnam have strengthened in the last 50 years. Vietnam is at the heart of India’s Act East policy.
Energy Cooperation in the South China Sea:
India’s Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) is exploring oil in the South China Sea in areas claimed by Vietnam. However, China is opposing it. Vietnam is a major partner country in promoting stability in the region, as it belongs to both ASEAN and the Indo-Pacific region.
Vietnam has supported India’s claim for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council.
