4th Quad Summit- 2022: Tokyo, Japan
Recently the Fourth Summit of the Quad Leaders for the year 2022 concluded in Tokyo.
The Fourth Quad (QUAD) Summit reiterated the strong commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region. The members of the Quad have reaffirmed their resolve to maintain an international rules-based order.
Key findings of the 4th Quad Summit
- The Quad nations have agreed to create a ground-based monitoring and sustainable development framework. The framework is targeted at combating illegal, unregulated and unprotected (IUL) fishing.
- The leaders agreed to provide resources for geo-observation data to the Quad countries through the Quad Satellite Data Portal. Through this, monitoring of climate-related events, disaster preparedness and sustainable use of marine resources will be helped.
- Over the next five years, infrastructure support and investment of over US$ 50 billion will be provided in the Indo-Pacific region.
- Strengthening the capacities of countries in need to deal with debt issues under the G20 Common Framework.
- In addition, credit availability and transparency will be promoted through the Quad Debt Management Resource Portal.
- The Quad Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Package (Q-CHAMP) has been launched. The initiative has two themes: Mitigation and Adaptation.
- The Quad Partnership on Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) in the Indo-Pacific region has been established. This initiative will strengthen cooperation in case of disasters in the region, and deal with them effectively.
- First Quad Cyber Security Day will be launched. The day will sensitize individuals in the Quad, Indo-Pacific and beyond to better guard against cyber threats.
Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD)
- The Quad is an informal strategic dialogue between Australia, India, Japan and the United States. It was earlier called the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue.
- It aims to deepen economic, diplomatic and military ties between these 4 countries.
- The Quad began as a general partnership after the devastating tsunami in the Indian Ocean in 2004.
- The Quad leaders held their first formal summit in the year 2021.
