25 Years of Progress for Women since The Beijing Declaration

The Generation Equality Forum (GEF) began in Mexico in March and concluded in Paris on July 2021. It is organized to evaluate progress towards gender equality since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the 4th World Conference on Women 25 years ago.

About the GEF

  • The GEF is a global gathering for gender equality organized by UN Women. It is co-hosted by the governments of Mexico and France in partnership with youth and civil society.
  • GEF aims to ensure concrete progress towards gender equality during the United Nations Decade of Action (2020-2030) to meet the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • The Forum outlined how the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the risk of poverty and gender-based violence. At the same time, there is also a need to ensure that gender issues remain at the center of the post-COVID agenda.
  • The GEF plans to launch a movement in support of the ‘Global Acceleration Plan for Gender’ for the next five years. Another key way that organizations like Equality Now can engage with member states, UN agencies, civil society organizations, and private sector companies in the GEF is through the Action Coalitions (like the GBV Action Coalition mentioned above).
