2-DG oral drug
2-DG oral drug
Recently, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories has decided to commercially launch the drug ‘2-deoxy-D-glucose’ (2-DG) of COVID.
It is to be known that 2-DG is an ‘oral drug’ which has been developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) as an anti-COVID drug.
Some time ago, for the treatment of corona virus patients in hospitals, the drug ‘2-DG’ was allowed to be used as adjuvant medical therapy in emergency situations.
How does 2-Deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) work?
- 2DG medicine comes as a powder in sachets, which is dissolved in water and taken through the mouth.
- The 2DG drug gets stored in the virus-infected cells, and stops the virus from multiplying by inhibiting the synthesis and energy production of the virus.
Impact
Its selective storage in virus-infected cells makes this drug unique. The drug reduces the average recovery time of a hospitalized patient by 60 hours and oxygen demand by 40%.
